- Hispanics (or Latinos) represent the largest minority group in the U.S.
with 281.4 million or 12.5%.
- Latino population increased 57.9% from 1990 to 2000 compared to an
increase of 13.2% for the total U.S. population.
- Hispanic-owned businesses are growing at a rate of about 9 times that of
all U.S. businesses.

- From 1987 to 1992, the number of Latino-owned businesses increased 76%.
- In 1997 there were 1.2 million Hispanic-owned small businesses – about
6% of all small businesses.

- The following graph shows the decrease in non-minority owned compared to
the increase in minority owned small businesses from 1982 to 1997.
- NOTE: 1997 is the latest date for which we have solid comparative data
from the Economic Census.

groups – the yellow line represents Hispanic small business ownership -
outpacing all others since 1987.

- We have four metropolitan areas with significant Latino-owned businesses
- Joplin, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield.
- As you can see, while Joplin has the least number of firms, Latinos have
the greatest number of any minority group.

- Funded by BRIDG, the Kansas City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the
Kauffman Foundation.
- Study of existing Latino business owners – those who had been in
business at least two years - in Greater Kansas City.
- Survey sent to 650 business owners; response rate of 15.4%. Interviewed a dozen owners randomly
selected from the 650.

- In 2002, BRIDG conducted a statewide study of small business owners’
needs and preferences. I will
compare a few of the findings from our Latino study to this larger study
– indicated as MONA.
